About 60 family members of the crash victims attended the memorial service under a white and yellow tent erected on Nimitz Hill overlooking the crash site. English/Nat Relatives of the people killed in the air crash on Guam attended a memorial service on Friday, on the hillside close to the impact site. As they remembered the dead, some of the 28 who survived were being airlifted to the Korean capital of Seoul for more intensive treatment of their burns. The cause of the disaster is still a mystery - investigators have dismissed reports that the pilot of the aircraft had confused two separate navigational beacons. . About 60 family members of the crash victims attended the memorial service under a white and yellow tent erected on Nimitz Hill overlooking the crash site. Buddhist Monks led the memorial, chanting prayers while relatives burned incense. Mourners, overcome with grief, marched behind the monks from the tent to the edge of the cliff overlooking the plane wreckage. Rika Matsuda, who survived, layed flowers in memory of her mother who died in the accident. Meanwhile, survivors recovered in Guam Memorial hospital before those well enough were airlifted to South Korea to receive specialist treatment for burns. A United States military Medivac C-9 plane flew the victims out of Guam. A team of burns specialists had flown to Agana from the U-S to assess the victims. They brought specialist equipment like intravenous fluids and respirators to treat the victims. U-S National Transportation Safety Board (N-T-S-B) investigators said the pilot of the Korean Air jet that crashed in Guam was in control of the plane and the crew sent no panicked messages to the control tower in the final seconds of the flight. Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Greg Feith, said the crew had been cleared for landing and were aware that equipment used for guiding the plane when landing was not working. The crew had proceeded correctly, giving no sign that anything was wrong. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We do know that they were cleared for the approach and that the crew did acknowledge that clearance and that the information that member Black had talked about where the crew was told about the glide scope being unusable was reported from the tower to the crew, and that's what prompted the crew's discussion about the glidescope being out of service, so we know that communication took place in the last minute or two of flight." SUPER CAPTION: Greg Feith, N-T-S-B investigator The N-T-S-B have been analysing the vital "black boxes" - data and voice recorders - found in the wreckage of the Boeing 747. But they still haven't identified the cause of the accident, which killed more than 200 people heading from the South Korean capital of Seoul to Guam on Wednesday. George Black, a board member of the N-T-S-B, said the evidence so far seemed to point towards some sort of error because the pilot had not lost control of the plane at the time of the crash. He added the fact that the plane skidded several hundred metres through the vegetation, slowing in speed before hitting a ridge on the hillside and breaking up, had increased the chances of some passengers surviving. SOUNDBITE: (English) "An airplane hits something lightly at first and then gradually flies down digging up the earth as it goes. This means that while all of this sliding along is occurring the airplane is losing speed and energy and then when it ultimately hits something hard, as this one did, it hit the other side of the little valley, and the break up occurred, but by that time it had lost enough energy and enough speed so that it was a survivable accident." SUPER CAPTION: George Black, N-T-S-B spokesman Black said it was still too early to assign blame for the catastrophe and further investigation would have to be carried out.
